Cherry Pie: Networking without the pits!

Cherry Pie 2010

Networking is normally like taking out the garbage: you know its good to do, but it ain’t gonna be fun. However, if you’re an established businessperson or wannabe tycoon who happens to be of the female persuasion, you have an alternative to the old wine and cheese or breakfast lecture. For the past six years Catherine Landry has been organizing Cherry Pie, an informal meet-and-greet for women that seeks to take the work out of networking. “No nametags, boring guest speakers, styrofoam coffee cups, obligatory 7am breakfast meetings and blah blah blah. Everything is fresh and exciting.”

The next Cherry Pie will take place on Tuesday, August 17 from 6 to 11pm at Soma SPA (700 Sussex Drive). If you are thinking of starting your own business or are already on your own payroll but are looking to make some new connections, the event provides an opportunity to meet some women with similar interests. If you are just looking to hang out, Cherry Pie also offers snacks,  mini-massages and shopping. I had the chance to ask Catherine a few questions about the event, the biggest business breakthroughs and tips for breaking into the business world.

The 613 Style File

As lots of independent shops and cool events continue to pop up in the city, we couldn’t help but notice that the city is home to some extremely fashion-forward, stylish people. Melanie Yugo, crafter extraordinaire and co-founder of Spins & Needles, and Lauryn Kronick, a vintage-obsessed fashion junkie, are starting a new column in Apartment613 that will (usually) air on the third Friday of the month. The column aims to debunk the myth that Ottawa is the town that fashion forgot. Inspired by other style blogs, they’re hitting the streets to profile interesting fashion eye-candy in different places and at events. So keep your eyes out and funk up your style - you never know when they may capture your look!

Savour the flavour of Wellington West this weekend

For anyone looking to add something to their weekend other the Fringe Festival, you might like to take a stroll down Wellington Street on Saturday when the neighborhood’s eclectic mix of food and retail vendors will be out for Taste of Wellington West. If you haven’t yet fallen in love with this neighborhood, Saturday will be your chance to taste some of Ottawa’s best caterers, bakeries, and restaurants, while browsing great shops like Victoire, Collected Works and the Cube Gallery. The Wellington West BIA has done a great deal to put this neighborhood on the map and now that the construction is (I think mostly) done you have no excuse but to wander over.

Food samples are out from 1-3pm and there will be a sidewalk sale from 1-5pm. Admission is free, but donation boxes for the Causeway Work Centre will be out. Read on for a full list of participating vendors.

Urban Outfitters comes to Ottawa

Trendy clothing store Urban Outfitters, home of overpriced but often irresistible goods, is scheduled to open its first Ottawa location this October.

After expanding locations in Montreal and Toronto and adding a store in Kingston, one could say it was about time to bring fashion to its typical clientele of starving university students. It may, however, have a substantial impact on other independent clothing stores in Ottawa.

Urban Outfitters is currently looking for employees to work in Ottawa.

Ravenswing’s Forth Annual DIY Craft and Zine Fair

On Sunday, May 30, 2010, local Ottawa arts group Ravenswing will be hosting the Fourth Annual DIY Craft and Zine Fair from 11am - 4pm in Minto Park, in the heart of Centretown. This fun, family-friendly event brings together the community and showcases a variety of local crafters, zine vendors and skill-sharing workshops in a collaborative environment. A great catch – 60% of all goods will be sold for $20 or less!

Complementing the great visuals available for purchase, the spring air filled with the amazing sounds of local musical acts The Uncles, The Mudplots, Adam Saiklaey, Winchester Warm, Sarah Hallman and New Teeth.

New this year, Les Ateliers will be presenting a series of free workshops including sprouting, beat boxing, and stencil printing. Workshops will be held in the park between 12:30 and 3:30.

Ravenswing is proud to once again share Minto Park with the Closeline Project, which will be airing out “dirty laundry” in support of ending violence against women. A public art display designed to celebrate the transformation from victim to survivor, women and children who are survivors of violence will be painting tee-shirts with messages about their experiences. The shirts will then hang from clotheslines in the park for all to see.

Please feel free to contact us to discuss the event, and please visit our website, www.ravenswingottawa.ca, for more information.

WHEN: May 30th, 2010

WHERE: Minto Park (Elgin and Gilmour). Rain location: Royal Legion, 330 Kent Street.

If you’ve ever wanted to relive the classic scene from Back to the Future when Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) blows away the crowd with Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode” you can get your chance on May 29 thanks to Rock n’ Roll Pizza Party.

The popular Thursday night out will bring the third, or possibly fourth, Rock n’ Roll Pizza Party Prom to the capital and it promises to be a great night out. Apartment613 favourites, Auntie Loo’s bakery and Victoire, will also be in on the fun with some tasty cupcakes and awesome vintage dresses.

Pick up your cheesiest tux and your most frilly dress soon because it promises to be a fun night (for only $6 at the door).

Apartment613’s Jonathan Migneault caught up with Luke Martin, one third of The White Wires (pictured above) and one of the Rock n’ Roll Pizza Party organizers. He talks about the prom, which will have live music for the first time and be at an all new venue: the Montgomery Legion at 330 Kent Street.

He also talks about what we can expect to see at the new and improved Rock n’ Roll Pizza Parties in the foreseeable future. The popular night has also moved to a new venue: IX Nightclub at 369-B Elgin Street.
