Date: Friday, March 12, 2010
Time: 11:30 AM
Location: Glebe Drama Room

Stop spending your hard-earned money! Start taking advantage of others’ fashion sense! Come to the clothing swap on March 12 in Glebe’s drama room!

Do you have clothing that has lost its appeal long ago? Do you have clothing that you would never DARE wear in public? Do you have clothing that you bought on impulse and would never DARE be caught wearing again? well first, blame the media for making you feel insecure, and THEN bring it to the clothing swap so you can choose a complete new wardrobe!

For every piece of clothing brought you will receive a ticket allowing you to take home ANY available garment. Bring your clothing to the ticket wicket between march 8 and 11th during lunch.

Also, there will be an entrance fee of $4, as proceeds will go towards this years fashion show!

Help put an end to the unnecessary, wasteful, disgraceful addiction to shopping!

All clothing left behind will be donated to a local woman’s shelter.

Spring clothing swap at Umi Café

Come to Umi (610 Somerset W.) on March 6th, from noon to 5pm for some early Spring cleaning! Trade in your once-loved clothes for some new treasures! Boots, scarves, hats, coats, sweaters, slippers - all items welcomed!

You may recall our previous clothing swap in October - a HUGE success! The folks there also managed to put together 14 bags of surplus clothing, as well as a substantial $ donation, for the Well/La Source. Let’s try to make this event even better - a TRUE community clothing swap!

P.S. - Don’t forget about Saturday night’s Retro Dance party… if you have any funky clothes, don’t hesitate to bring them in. There will be a big fat PRIZE for the best costume!

25th Ottawa Vintage Clothing Sale this Sunday!

I was seriously considering NOT posting about this event. Less people means less competition, less crowding and more awesome vintage clothing and jewelry for me! But then I remembered that most of my serious competition would have been planning their shopping strategy for months (Karen, my fellow Apt613 contributor, has been exercising her upper body for months in order to better push aside other shoppers… only in case of emergency of course).

Ottawa, for all its great qualities, is a bit of a fashion wasteland. Along with the awesomeness of the Dalhousie Street stores, the Annual Ottawa Vintage Clothing Sale stands out as an island of shopping excitement. This year, as many as 45 vendors will fill the elegant rooms of the Chateau Laurier for the 25th sale. The combination of a fancy setting with (for the most part) not so fancy prices is a winning combo. Recommended even for those who are not normally into vintage clothing sales.

The show is from 10 to 5 this Sunday, November 15, at the Chateau Laurier. Entry is $8 and they recommend that you bring a donation of food or cash for the Ottawa Food Bank as well. Also recommended, these tips on how to shop the Ottawa Vintage Sale from MaryAnn Harris, vintage fashionista extraordinaire.

Party dresses, dancing shoes

So, vintage is in. And if you’re lucky enough to find things that fit (my friend KT has all the luck), it’s a perfect trend to latch on to.

Well, Victoire is here to help you indulge this latest fad! This Saturday, Oct. 24, they’re hosting To The Nines, their first ever vintage party dress extravaganza. They’ll have food and drinks to keep you going while you peruse the racks of tulle, satin and taffeta.

And Victoire won’t let you down - no need to find the perfect dress and then never wear it because that perfect pair of shoes never found you. The evening (and your outfit) will be made complete by the presence of La Chatte Bottée and their vintage shoes.

So, to get what you’ve been waiting for: the details! To The Nines will begin at 6pm, Saturday Oct 24, at Victoire (246 Dalhousie). It will run until 9pm, after which will be the perfect time to don your new threads and test out those dancing shoes!

This November, Ottawa will host an ambitious event that will bring together some of the best Canadian fashion, photography and food, all in the name of charity.

Fashion Cures à la Mode has teamed up with Ovarian Cancer Canada and fistfuls of local and national sponsors and participants in an effort to raise the profile of ovarian cancer. Running from November 4 to 7, this four-day fashion-fest features a myriad of events, including runway shows, silent auctions, photography exhibits, makeup, food and (naturally) shopping!

Featuring an excellent balance of strictly local as well as artists from across Canada, this is an excellent opportunity for Ottawa divas to brush manicured hands with photographers, makeup and hair experts from local salons, choicest food and cocktails and fashion all in the super chic accoutrements of the Arc Hotel.

Proceeds go to Ovarian Cancer Canada, which strikes over 2,500 women in Canada every year.

Early bird tickets are on sale right now – a four-day all-access pass runs you $107.69 before tax, while day and event-specific passes vary in price from $26 - $41.The early-bird rates are only available online until October 25. There are discounts for students available.

If you can’t wait for November, you can check out some upcoming pre-events, where tickets will also be sold at the special early-bird rate.

Ultimate clothing swap

Thanks to Caitlin for this insider tip!

The back of one’s closest can be a scary space. Peering into the depths, you never know what you might find - those florescent t-shirts, that pair of shoes that were never quite comfortable, the dress that looked so cute in the store but you just never had the occasion to wear it.

It’s time to delve into the depths, though - it will be totally worth it. This Saturday, down at the Jack Purcell Community Centre, you can bring in your old clothes and swap them for something new and exciting. There’s something reminiscent of a treasure hunt at these things - rummaging around and finding a great item, at which point you think, “How could anybody ever want to get rid of this??”

The best part? It’s a fundraiser - all proceeds from the suggested entry fee of $10 will go to a community library project in Benin, part of CACHA’s work.

Lamb Rabbit Tea Party Launch Party

teapartyWhile there have been claims the recession is done and gone, some of our pocketbooks might not be sharing that elated feeling. Which makes it tough when, faced with autumn-induced memories of heading back to school wearing new threads, all you want to do is indulge in a bit of shopping.

If you’re feeling that budget strain, what better thing to do than accessorize! A new pair of earrings or a bright bangle can jazz up an old outfit in no time.

If you’re looking for such a wardrobe boost, head on down to Victoire Boutique (246 Dalhousie) for the launch of Lamb Rabbit Jewelry. And this is not a plain old launch - this will be a tea party launch party! The tea party will be from 4-7pm, Sept 27 - and the word on the street is that there will be cranberry scones. (For a sneak preview of what eclectic delights might be in store, check out Lamb Rabbit’s Etsy site!)
