The first session of the new year starts off with a bang! Or a stab, maybe. A thump in the night. Our colourful models may not be as innocent as they appear. Someone killed Dr. Black, but who, and how? No scarlet sins or white lies will cut the mustard this time: this is a plum job and you’ll leave green with envy or proud as a peacock for figuring it out.
.
So let’s all meet in the Lounge and let the accusations fly!

Global Game Jam 2012

Carleton School of Information Technology hosts Global Game Jam (GGJ) in Ottawa. In a Game Jam, artists, programmers, and designers come together to make video games. Each participant works in a small team (usually 4 to 6 people) on a complete game project over the course of a limited time period, usually over a weekend. In this year’s GGJ, people all over the world meet at more than 100 different sites to jam simultaneously!
.
Important Notes
.
Participation is open to everybody and is not limited to students
Teams are formed at the start of the Jam.
You may plan your team ahead or just show up and form one
Individual registration is necessary (See Registration)
Games will be designed based on a theme to be announced at the start of the Jam
There is no restriction on the language/platform/etc (See Resources)
.
How It Works
.
Everyone meets at their local Game Jam on Friday, January 27, 2011. Doors will be shut promptly at 5:00pm. Local Organizers will then share the constraints, rules, and the theme for the Game Jam. Everyone will have 15 minutes to come up with a pitch and then share it with the group. Teams will then be formed; no one leaves until everyone is a part of a team. Teams are free to use the space at the host venue. Each team will have until 3:00PM on Sunday, January 29 to create their game. The local jurors will then go around and play all the games and at 5:00pm, each team will present their game to all participants. Each Local Jam will announce what team best embodies the spirit of the jam. All finished games will be archived onto the Global Game Jam website for all to play. Participation is free. Competition will happen in Azrieli Pavilion, Carleton University. Computers with common programming and multimedia software and internet access, and also access to rest area and food to buy (and some free meals) will be provided.

100 Mile Gift Guide: Idle Hands wrap-up

Created with Admarket’s flickrSLiDR.
On Saturday, St. Luke’s Anglican Church hosted over thirty artisans for the third annual Idle Hands craft show. A couple of intrepid, craft-loving Apartment613ers headed on down to discover what treats lay in store.

As you’ll see in the photos above, it was packed with wall-to-wall tables overflowing with jewelry, prints, pottery, preserves, coffee beans,  clothing, and much much more. While we know that Idle Hands comes but once a year, you can still find many of the vendors at the upcoming craft shows around town. And if you see something you really like, simply contact the crafters – we’ve included websites and names after the jump.

100 Mile Gift Guide: Bloom Artisan Boutique

In the spirit of support local, we’re bringing back the 100 Mile gift Guide, you’re guide to shopping Ottawa for xmas. Post and photos by Molly Campbell.

Lisa Wilson points out a colourful column of threads wrapped around a strand of hair on a young girl visiting her York Street shop on a Saturday afternoon.

“This is how it all started,” she says.

At the age of 19, Wilson began wrapping people’s hair in the Byward Market. Soon she was a part of the downtown vendor community, working hard to sell her own handmade goods.

That was more than 10 years ago. Today, after a few years at home to raise her two children, Wilson is returning to her artisan roots to open her first shop, Bloom Artisan Boutique.
