Local kayakers take adventures to the web

By Aneka Rao

Last November, Mike McKay and Mike Kobzik decided to throw a party. Both avid paddlers, they’d recently started filming their kayaking trips and wanted to share the videos with friends and family. But as they started to plan the party, word spread through the Ottawa white water community. More and more people wanted to come, local companies called wanting to be sponsors and people started donating door prizes. Eventually, the small get-together turned into a movie-screening and fundraising event for the Ottawa Riverkeeper. Says McKay, “It ended up being a lot bigger than we thought. We held it at the Corner Bar down in the Glebe and it was probably the busiest night they’d ever had. It was jammed, people couldn’t move. It was crazy.”

Inspired by this success, McKay and Kobzik formed Five 2 Nine Productions and, from their already shot footage, created a whitewater-kayaking documentary called Just Like You Imagined. They realized that film was a great way to take their love of paddling to another level: to showcase the sport, get others excited about kayaking and educate a broader audience about water issues in Ottawa and around the world.

Cherry Pie: Networking without the pits!

Cherry Pie 2010

Networking is normally like taking out the garbage: you know its good to do, but it ain’t gonna be fun. However, if you’re an established businessperson or wannabe tycoon who happens to be of the female persuasion, you have an alternative to the old wine and cheese or breakfast lecture. For the past six years Catherine Landry has been organizing Cherry Pie, an informal meet-and-greet for women that seeks to take the work out of networking. “No nametags, boring guest speakers, styrofoam coffee cups, obligatory 7am breakfast meetings and blah blah blah. Everything is fresh and exciting.”

The next Cherry Pie will take place on Tuesday, August 17 from 6 to 11pm at Soma SPA (700 Sussex Drive). If you are thinking of starting your own business or are already on your own payroll but are looking to make some new connections, the event provides an opportunity to meet some women with similar interests. If you are just looking to hang out, Cherry Pie also offers snacks,  mini-massages and shopping. I had the chance to ask Catherine a few questions about the event, the biggest business breakthroughs and tips for breaking into the business world.

Twirling titties and titillating tales! Burlesque this weekend

Summer is the season of sexy: short shorts and tank tops, tanned bodies glistening with sweat, frolicking on the beach… you get the picture (and if you don’t I’m sure you can find some online). So it makes sense that Ottawa’s thriving burlesque community would be planning a couple of events for the most titillating time of the year.

Tonight, the Coalition for a Carleton Sexual Assault Centre is hosting Artgams, a night of art, dance and sex-positivity with performances by radical folk group Three Little Birds, Rockalily Burlesque and an array of spoken word artists. The event is a fundraiser to support their sexual help line. Show starts at 7 at the Mercury Lounge (56 Byward Market Square). Tickets range from $8 to $12 and are available at Venus Envy (320 Lisgar Street). A few will be available at the door.

Those of you who are more hands on can get some professional burlesque start training this Thurday at Sacha’s Dance Studio (346 Richmond Rd – 2nd Floor). This workshop will not only teach you how to make your own pasties with tassels like the ones pictured above, but also how to twirl them like a pro! Cost is $20 and space is limited. Reserve your space by contacting the studio at info@sachasdancestudio.com

Last but not least, the provocative (and very productive of late) ladies of Rockalily will also be putting on a show this Friday at Mavericks (221 Rideau St.). Bringing a new ‘twist’ to traditional fairy tails such as Hansel and Gretel, Robin Hood and Beauty and the Beast, BurlyTales will be set to live music performed by Thundercunt and Goldenrod’s Electric S…hock Therapy! Doors open at 9. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door and can be purchased at Vertigo (193 Rideau St.) and Tuesdays the Romance Store (1239 Wellington St.)

Does anyone know of upcomming events for Sexual Overtones or the Sin Sisters?

Discover Cooking at the LCBO

Despite the torrential rain we saw this week: IT’S SUMMER! With summer comes the need to exploit every possible opportunity to enjoy the refreshing wares available at your local LCBO. This summer the LCBO is also offering Discover Cooking Classes, providing you with the skills to create even more opportunities to imbibe.

With class names like “To Copenhagen with Love” and “The World on a Plate” there’s bound to be something to tempt your taste buds. Although not particularly hands on, for ~$50 a pop you get a sample of each dish, wine pairings with some of the menu, and the know how to re-create the deliciousness once you get home. For those of you with bigger appetites (and bigger wallets), classes such as the “East Coast Beach Party” feature full portions of each entrée at a cost of $85 per person.

Taught by local chefs like Hector Diaz of the Casino du Lac-Leamy and Ken Harper of Chop Chop Catering, most classes are 2 hours in length and are offered on weekday evenings. Classes are held at both the Rideau and Nepean Crossroads locations (not all classes are offered at both locations) and pre-registration is required.

Spins & Needles best in show party!

This ain't no Lassie.

It’s not hard to be inspired by the Pop Life exhibition over at the National Gallery. The Spins and Needles folk, it appears, have decided to act on their inspiration based on Jeff Koons’ stainless steel rabbit, and are holding a Best in Show party this Friday.

From creating your own critter to making a blue ribbon for your special pet, crafting will abound at the Legion (330 Kent St). For a cover of only $8, you too can collage or work on a plush balloon animal (not quite sure what that would look like, but creativity knows no bounds!). Funky, old-school beats will be provided courtesy of DJs Jason Pelletier + Meterman.

It’s all getting underway this Friday, July 23 at 8pm. UPDATE: The show seems to have been postponed until September - thanks for the tip, Stephan! We’ll all just have to hold off on our critter crafting until then…

Apt613 Guide to getting a bike on the cheap.

Post by Dev Marr

Picking your first bike (or simply a replacement bike) can be a daunting task. If I hadn’t had help from a friend I wouldn’t have known where to start. In fact, even if I had known where to start, having a friend come along to give a second opinion is always a good idea.

Lets face it, bikes can be expensive. Even lower end ‘Walmart’ bikes can cost upwards of $200. If you’re a full time student like myself and fall into the category that I like to eloquently call, “financially restricted,” dropping hundreds of dollars on a brand new ride seems rather unreasonable. Fortunately, Ottawa has no shortage of second hand bike shops that can knock a fair portion off this prohibitive price tag off. My two personal favourite shops are Re-Cycles and The Bike Dump. Both places have their pros and cons. Personally I prefer Re-Cycles for their hands-on volunteering program, cheap DIY prices and super friendly staff. The only downfall is that their selection of overhauled ‘ready to go’ bikes is sometimes pretty small due to their growing popularity. On the flip side, there’s the Bike Dump. With a plethora of bikes from cheap $75 ‘as is’ bikes to higher end overhauls, you’ll likely find the bike you’re looking for there. My main contention is that few times I’ve stopped in the staff aren’t always as ‘receptive’ to the uninitiated cyclist as a first time bike buyer would like.

urbanfête: A Paper Party!

img00014

To some people, this admission will come as no surprise: I love paper. Not your everyday white 90lb 8.5 x11, but paper - printed, patterned, textured paper. I learned this love of all things pulp from a dear friend, who is also one of the best card makers I’ve ever met. She was the one who stumbled across urbanfête, Ottawa’s newest paper store.

img00015Owned by two friends who finally found their paths cross in the same metropolis, urbanfête has it all - beautiful paper, invitation services and - hopefully! - continued crafting events where you can learn to use paper to create, well, whatever you want!

The location is perfect for stumbling across - which, in Apt613 code, means it’s a bit out of the way. But it is absolutely worth the trip to the store at 517 Rideau - the bright store will welcome whomever walks through the door. They’re open from 10am-6pm Tuesday to Friday, and Saturday from 10am-5pm.
