Weekend Round Up

So we’ve had a lot of music posts this week, but only because this weekend has at least a dozen great opportunities for you to pick and choose from. If you’re in the mood for cooking up a delicious musical stew this weekend, start out with a bit of classical strings on Friday, add in a dash of surf punk rock, and end off with a tasty indie finish.

What else can you load onto your social plate? (Yes, we’re going with a food theme this week - what can I say, I just had a delicious breakfast.) It’s the Souljazz Orchestra’s cd release party on Friday at Babylon, and I’ve got it on good authority that it’s going to be a craaazy dance party. Ritual also has a great line up, with DJ Heather, Bonjay and DJ Balu making appearances.

Other local cuisine includes the Balconies, and Monkey Junk and the Brothers Chaffey. And because we all want the weekend to last just one day longer, consider Monday to be that extra day to fit in another fabulous show - banjo-maestro Béla Fleck will not disappoint.

For you photography aficionados, don’t forget to get your stray 4×6 photos to Canteen by Sunday. While you’re there, go ahead and make yourself a plush monster - why not? If you’re feeling crafty earlier in the weekend, and in the mood for a little nuptial action, be sure to attend Wed By Hand on Saturday.

And because it’s still February for a few more days, catch one of the Vagina Monologues shows on Friday night or Saturday. And Rockalily presents Boudoir Babes on Friday night, too, if you’re hankering for a bit of burlesque.

DIY Nuptials: Wed By Hand

It all starts sometime - whether you’re the one who popped the question, eagerly accepted or ended up in the supporting cast line up - and once they start, weddings just don’t seem to stop.

And when planning this big day, the “making it ours” aspect inevitably arises, whether the spouses-to-be order in their favourite flowers or get matching rings. But those aren’t the only ways to make that special day unique, as evidenced by the move towards DIY weddings. To help you out in this endeavour, some Ottawa crafters have decided to host Wed By Hand this Saturday - a craft and supply sale specifically for those in the midst of wedding planning.

As Ottawa’s first indie wedding show, this “crafting meets all things wedding” event will have many unique wares and ideas. From jewelry to cakes, photography to dresses, vendors will also be on hand to give advice and help you make your event as “you” as possible. Who doesn’t want to escape the cookie-cutter bridesmaid dresses that inevitably get relegated to the back of one’s closet?

The best part: it’s only $3 to get in, and all proceeds will go to benefit Team Diabetes Canada. This show is also being paired with Bridal Bargains, which can help you plan the big day on a tight budget. It all takes place this Saturday, Feb 27, from 10am to 3pm at the Courtyard Marriott (350 Dalhousie in the Market).

Adieu Winterlude! Pictures of the Urban Cozy Project

Benches

This year, Winterlude was gone faster then a snow bank in Vancouver (oh snap!). While we generally don’t cover the well-known festival (which hardly needs plugging from lowly bloggerati such as ourselves) we were happy to showcase Spins and Needles terrific public art project. The Urban Cozy Project gave a little homey charm to suckuary February, showing off the City’s lesser-known zany side. Ottawa photographer and occasional Apt613 contributor Sarah Mercer got out to Confederation park a couple of days ago to snap these mementos of Winterlude 2010.

Plush Monster Workshop at Canteen

Have you always wanted to create a horrid plush creature? Do you find big teeth and bloodshot eyes just the most adorable thing? Is there some fearsome creature in your imagination that is just screaming to be made into a soft sculpture? Then Canteen has the workshop for you! Make your own plush monster!

Gabe Thirlwall from Fish on Fridays will help your gruesome imaginary beast become a plush reality. We will go through the basic steps of how to make a stuffed monster and take some time
with each step. If you can’t sew that doesn’t matter, she’ll show you. And besides we will be working with very forgiving textiles (felt and/or polar fleece) so results will be just super! All supplies will be provided (textiles, stuffing, needle, thread, etc…) but please come with lots of ideas… and maybe a sketch or two.

When: Sunday February 28th, 3pm to 6pm

Where: Canteen (238 Dalhousie St.)

Cost: $25 + tax, all materials included

So it’s the last weekend of that winter festival, but if you’re hankering to stick to indoor activities this weekend, there are a few to keep you occupied.

Sadly, we’ve heard the Owen Pallett shows at the Blacksheep are all sold out, but have no fear - other music options abound. Tonight’s show at Raw Sugar with Mary Halvorson and Jessica Pavone is sure to be captivating - their unique collaborations and compositions will be introduced by the sweet sounds of The Silver Birch Society.

Other music shows include the final tour of Straight Reads the Line at Mavericks, as well as Woodpigeon at the Blacksheep on Sunday afternoon - my recent discovery of this band was so overwhelmingly exciting that if their latest cd had been on cassette, I’d have worn out the tape by now. If you’re down in Wakefield for this show, be sure to also check out their International Film Festival, running every Sunday from now until the end of March.

For events that are incorporating art, music and more, check out UnScene GrassRoutes, the Great Glebe Fundraiser or Voices for Haiti at Wall Space Gallery. Also, check out Sexual Overtones and friends at the Ladytron DJ Snowblower 2010 Closing Party. And because it’s the last weekend of Ottawa’s annual winter fiesta, it’s also your last chance to do some crafting outdoors with Spins and Needles!

I’m not sure if it’s just because it’s Valentine’s weekend, or Winterlude, or what - but this weekend is full of options. I’ll get the shameless self-promotion out of the way and then move to the other good stuff - you’ve probably heard about this little fundraiser happening on Sunday afternoon. Sure, it’s a bit risque for some, but it promises to be a great show with incredible food.

We don’t usually cover Winterlude happenings because they get a ton of press all on their own - however, with Spins and Needles‘ participation this year, things have gotten a bit more interesting! This weekend, they’ve got several crafty events planned - and they will all be set to some funky tunes. And check out their Urban Cozy project - look for Apt613’s entry from Jess, our knitter extraordinaire!

If you need something to warm yourself up, stop on by the Festa da Carnavale for a little taste of Brazil on Friday. Or, if Saturday is your night on the town, check out the Big Salsa Concert with Caché.

And if you just need to celebrate the chocolate and roses holiday all weekend, there are several va-va-voom events to keep you occupied all weekend long, from film to fundraisers to more burlesque!

What are you definitely checking out this weekend? Let us know below!

Calling all photographers! Canteen wants your homeless 4×6 photos

Craving the fame that comes from being displayed on the walls of one of Ottawa’s favourite galleries? Looking to turn your flickr habit into cold hard cash (in this case likely coins)? Canteen is offering you the chance to sell your homeless 4×6 photos on February 2nd. They will handle selling the photos for one dollar each and you can drop by, chat, have a drink and watch the coins roll in. They are calling it “Canteen’s spicy winter no-theme photo fiasco.”

Drop your photos off with your name and contact on the back before February 1st. The fun runs from 7-10pm on February 2. More info is online at the Canteen blog. If you’re in our Flickr pool and contributing your stuff, let us know and we’ll keep an eye out for you.
