Weekend roundup: Stuff to do in Ottawa

The Woodshed Orchestra will throw an unforgettable party with great hats at Raw Sugar on Saturday.

So the holidays are coming quick, and festive party calendars are filling up. If you’ve got time between all of your December commitments, make sure you check out some of the events below – you won’t be sorry, even though they’re not all holiday-ish. Like this pizza-eating contest, for example. Not particularly a festive activity, but entertaining nonetheless.

Tonight, on your way back from a little West Wellington shop hopping, stop by the Elmdale to hear Tanya Davis and Sarah Hallman. A little further east, you can catch legend Dama at Eri Cafe, while Molly Sweeney and Kristen Bussandri will be at Raw Sugar. punkottawa.com is having its holiday party at Mavericks that night, too, with Bat Sabbath and more. Meaghan Smith is at the Black Sheep tonight, while tomorrow C. R. Avery and My Favourite Tragedy drop by. It’s also the Dubsmack Ugly Christmas Sweater Party at Ritual on Friday, while Silver Creek releases their album at Mavericks and Nrml teams up with Babylon to throw a little holiday party themselves. On Saturday, Hollerado heads to Ritual, and The Woodshed Orchestra is at Raw Sugar. Good2Go is at Irene’s that night, with The Cutmen also playing a few tunes. Hairspray is also being performed this weekend, while if you’re feeling the need to dance, the Ottawa Veg Ball will have both groovy tunes and tasty food.

If you’re thinking about getting any local prints, paintings, or other art for someone special, you’ve got a plethora of choices this weekend. Lemonjellow is having their pARTy on Friday night and continue the festivities for the rest of the weekend, with local artists’ pieces for sale. CycleLogik is hosting an Occupy! Art Sale on Friday night, with works contributed from some of Ottawa’s favourite artists. Craftalicious is on Saturday – drop off your Craft Crawl Passport for a chance to win a whole basket of goodies!

100 Mile Gift Guide: Idle Hands wrap-up

Created with Admarket’s flickrSLiDR.
On Saturday, St. Luke’s Anglican Church hosted over thirty artisans for the third annual Idle Hands craft show. A couple of intrepid, craft-loving Apartment613ers headed on down to discover what treats lay in store.

As you’ll see in the photos above, it was packed with wall-to-wall tables overflowing with jewelry, prints, pottery, preserves, coffee beans,  clothing, and much much more. While we know that Idle Hands comes but once a year, you can still find many of the vendors at the upcoming craft shows around town. And if you see something you really like, simply contact the crafters – we’ve included websites and names after the jump.

Weekend roundup: What to do in Ottawa

Local folk rock quintet Kalle Mattson produced this amazing cartoon history of the world to go along with their single Thick as Thieves. The video, which cost only $250 to make, was made with paper cutouts using stop motion technique. Catch the originals this Saturday at Zaphod’s.

The end of Support Local month is upon us, Ottawa – although far be it from me to say that we should stop supporting our community once Nov. 30 passes by. Before that date comes, there’s still time to take in at least three more events – or all of them, for you Support Local die-hards out there. We’ve got Vintage Madness retro night, Rémi Thériault at Town, Pat Vaz at the Modern Shop, postcard writing at Raw Sugar, manicures, and an open mic writers’ night. Plus, don’t forget to check out the businesses involved and catch their discounts before the month ends!

While Electric Fields started last night, you can experience this sound and space festival all weekend long – tonight, it’s Church Music at St. Brigid’s and it wraps up on Sunday Saturday with Electric Pow Wow at the Museum of Civilization. Call-and-response song lovers should head out in droves to see Mother Mother tonight, while Ganglians and Friends are at Raw Sugar and Old Man Luedecke is at the Black Sheep. Anyone with a love of Newfoundland and good music should be at the Bronson Centre with Hey Rosetta! Friday night, while the rest of you can join Sound of Lions in celebrating their recent Xpress poll win. Tanya Janca has a cd release party Friday, followed by Kalle Mattson’s re-release on Saturday. For those of you sporting a ‘stache, be at the Elmdale on Saturday for Beau’s Movember Dance Party. Also that night, you can take in some Irish tunes, head over to a kitchen party, catch some music in a jail, or see Amos the Transparent.

Craft sales continue, with both Idle Hands and the Hintonburg Artisan Craft Fair happening on Saturday, and there’s a jewellery show tonight, too. Anyone in the market for unique artwork should be at SAW Gallery Friday, when they’re having their annual SKETCH fundraiser

100 Mile Gift Guide: Bloom Artisan Boutique

In the spirit of support local, we’re bringing back the 100 Mile gift Guide, you’re guide to shopping Ottawa for xmas. Post and photos by Molly Campbell.

Lisa Wilson points out a colourful column of threads wrapped around a strand of hair on a young girl visiting her York Street shop on a Saturday afternoon.

“This is how it all started,” she says.

At the age of 19, Wilson began wrapping people’s hair in the Byward Market. Soon she was a part of the downtown vendor community, working hard to sell her own handmade goods.

That was more than 10 years ago. Today, after a few years at home to raise her two children, Wilson is returning to her artisan roots to open her first shop, Bloom Artisan Boutique.
