The 2nd Coming of the Fuzzy Bunny Slaughterhouse Easter Extravaganza!

Watch out for the Bunnies!

The Greatest Easter Show Since the Resurrection!

The inaugural Easter Sunday Extravaganza sent ripples throughout the Canadian Entertainment world… eventually causing a global economic breakdown… tanking markets, widespread job losses, and thousands of destitute families without a roof over their heads.

I know what you’re thinking: HOW CAN YOU POSSIBLY TOP THAT?

Well, by god, we’re going to try. As the world finally squeezes itself out of the recession, Fuzzy Bunny Slaughterhouse is triumphantly returning to the Rainbow to reign down a Holy War against all the economies of the world. Join everyone’s favourite ballistic Bunnies as they take to the stage with the most Ferociously Funny, Wonderfully Wicked, and Overly Obscene show this town has ever seen.

MARVEL at their lack of impulse control!
BE CONFUSED by their pink clothes and sexually ambiguous behavior!
HORRIFY your friends with tales of their on stage bloody/half naked antics!
BE OFFENDED by the abundance of quasi-religious imagery mixed with suggestive adult themes!
ENJOY every single freaking SECOND of awesome!

This is something that will be talked about for years to come. Miss it, and you’ll likely die a lonely, tired, bitter old man. Even if you’re a chick.

With Special Guests: TEARS FROM A RAINBOW. This British Acoustic duo will warm up the crowd whether you want them to or not! Their soulful, whiny ballands will appeal to the hearts and groins of almost no one in attendance!

Also keep an eye out for other special guests throughout the evening! What kind of surprises could be in store? You’ll just have to show up and find out!

Keep checking this page for a pair of printable, cut-out bunny ears! Wear them at the door to get in for ½ price!

Be sure to show up early to buy a copy of our album and our limited edition merchandise!

The 101 on Ottawa’s Comedy Scene

Post by Dave Atkinson: file clerk by day, semi-successful local comedian by night, roguish space pirate by later night. Check out his comedy podcast, Shitshooters, on iTunes.

Good Morrow hip and with it bloggy-type reading persons! It’s time that all the weird cliquey scenes that make up Ottawa’s awesomeness get talking to each other.  To that end, guess who has yet another weird cliquey scene to tell you about!  The answer is me.  I do.  See below.

Ottawa’s Comedy scene is bursting with awesome.  Right now there are over a dozen excellent professional comics living in the city, working out their new material at free or cheap open mic nights alongside a roster of talented up-comers and various weirdos (cross dressing ventriloquist. Seriously.  Debuted in November 09).  If you want comedy credentials, we have them.  There are several Comedy Now! stars living in Ottawa and appearances by locals at Montreal’s Just for Laughs festival are common. This year, Ottawa comics are going to Just for Laughs, The Halifax comedy festival, recording a TV special and touring all over the damn place.

Best of all, this kind of talent isn’t new to the Capital. For over thirty years, Ottawa has been cranking out excellent comedic talent - Tom Green, Norm Macdonald, Jeremy Hotz, Dan Aykroyd and Jon Dore to name a few, each of them just another local act at some point over the last thirty years.  Bottom line: Ottawa’s funny. You can see us work out and have fun all over town or, if you’re some kind of hermit computer nerd person, there are also all local, all funny radio shows and podcasts.

Here’s a few of the things the gang’s up to:

Sexual Overtones visits Apt613 for a Valentine’s Day TEA-ser!

For all your burlesque needs...

For all your burlesque needs...

Flowers? Uninspired. Candy? Unoriginal. Dinner and a movie?  You’re trying to get your Valentine’s date in bed, not put them to sleep.

You can do better. In collaboration with Sexual Overtones, we are organizing a little something special for you all on Valentine’s Day. Plus, by buying a ticket you won’t just be showing some love to your lovers or friends, but to Apartment613 as well:  net proceeds will go to our bandwidth fund to help pay our interweb and other expenses.

This Valentine’s day afternoon, Sexual Overtones - Ottawa premier Burlesque Group - will visit Apartment613 for an afternoon Tea-ser: a scrumptulescent combination of tea, good company and sexual satire.

Not only will you get to view a selection of the Overtone’s most popular skits, but you will get to participate in the most sexiest of British meals: high tea. The price of entry includes a cuppa Earl Grey or two, scones and cupcakes from Auntie Loos, strawberry jam, whipped cream, and some other treats whipped up by Apt613’s personal chef. This is exactly what the Queen would do on Valentine’s day.

The event takes place at 2pm, Sunday February 14 at the Bronson Centre (Mac Hall) 211 Bronson Ave. @ La Nouvelle Scène’s Bistro (333 King Edward Ave).

Tickets are $20 or 2 for $35. The easiest way to purchase is in-person at La Nouvelle Scène, by phone (613-241-2727 ext. 1) or online (http://nouvellescene.com/) from La Nouvelle Scene. TICKETS CAN BE PURCHASED AT CANTEEN (238 DALHOUSIE) or VENUS ENVY (320 LISGAR).

Everyone ages 19+ are welcome to attend. This is a photo-free event.

We hope to see you there!

Review of Bash’d! A Gay Rap Opera at the GCTC

Review written by Katie Marsh with help from Jessica Wells and Josh Alcock. BASH’d! A Gay Rap Opera runs from  January 14 to the 31, 2010 (Tuesday to Sunday). Tickets are $33 to $42.

Star-crossed lovers, a deft mix of  tragedy and comedy, and of course, the kind of slick rhymes that haven’t been seen on stage since the Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff left hip-hop for super stardom and a goat farm on mars respectively. Bash’d: A Gay Rap Opera mixes the best of these Shakespearean conventions into a decidedly modern take on love, family and homophobia.

The tale follows two young men from their first kiss through to the more difficult times that follow. Dillon, “the fruit that fell far from the family tree”, leaves a homophobic small town to find true love with Jack, the adopted son of two gay parents. The contrasting experiences of the two serve as the basis of their attraction: Dillon grew up sitting in the family chapel thinking “Jesus looks hot in those robes,” while Jack got tips on cruising the gay bars from his parents.

Perhaps the play’s strongest feature is the skill with which it was put together and performed. While the only people on stage - performer/playwright Chris Craddock and Nathan Cuckow - play multiple characters simultaneously, their clever use of lighting, acting, choreography and changing music beats ensures that the audience never lose their way. For instance, at one point both actors play Dillon’s mother in the same scene, without it being at all confusing for the audience.

The rapping, which draws on the old-school style exemplified by Grand Master Flash and other early masters of the genre, is very cleaver and easy to follow. For me and my crew, the highlight of the show was a roll call of the denizens of your neighborhood gay bar. The scene drew on characters of fag hags, bears, lesbians and others to hilarious effect, using the stereotypes for comedy without letting them take over the show.

Insensitivity Training at Yuk Yuks

Make any night look better next to the dysfunctional antics of Ottawa’s award-winning Improv comedy troupe. Get a great laugh with Insensitivity Training, a politically incorrect evening of inappropriateness. Playing to sold-out shows at this summer’s Fringe Theatre Festival, these guys have become the city’s edgiest live comedy show in just over a year. Their deft and deadly humour can be found busting guts every Sunday night at Yuk Yuk’s (292 Elgin St.) starting from 9 pm. With a $5 door fee and wait staff on hand, you can kiss your pay-by-the-hour shrink goodbye.

New Student Pricing!!!

School can be tough enough sometimes, and the boys at Insensitivity Training feel for you. Starting this week bring a valid piece of Student I.D. and in 2 for 1. Yes! a sales pitch which had only been reserved for late night pizza comes to great comedy and laughs at Improv.

Weekend Round Up

For this new, and hopefully ongoing, little feature, we’ll pull together various exciting weekend events happening in and around town. No guarantees that we’ll include it all, though - that’s what our handy-dandy calendar tries to do!

This weekend promises to be, as one fellow Apt613 editor said, “sweaty, loud and hot.” This was in reference to Saturday’s Daft Punk Tribute show, which, if you have any love for them whatsoever, will be well worth the $12. You might find a similar experience, however, down at Sexapalooza or the Cirque Noir Fetish Party.

For local musical fare, check out Leif and friends at Cafe Dekcuf on Saturday night. And if you haven’t laughed heartily yet this year, Shanghai’s New Year Comedy Extravaganza will fix that right quick.

To wind down the weekend, take in the charming Old Man Luedecke at the Blacksheep at 4pm on Sunday. If you’ve had enough of music, head on over to Swizzles (246b Queen) at 2pm for Bywords’ Warm the Night fundraiser for Cornerstone women’s shelter, where poetry and readings will abound. I suspect there will also be more fundraisers for the Haiti quake, too - keep an eye out for one in your neighbourhood.

New Year Comedy Extravaganza at Shanghai

New Year Comedy Extravaganza! Get ready to laugh your rice sacks off! (Oriental Joke)

Friday, January 15, 2010 at 8:00pm - 1:00am (KARAOKE to follow)

$3 at the door!    Bring your friends and family!   Show starts at 9, seating starts at 8.

Incidentally we’ve been voted as the number one place to get a laugh in Ottawa. Coincidentally, Shanghai also serves classy Asian cuisine at ridiculously justifiable overpriced prices. In conjunction with the classy, scrumptious food, we’ve got a comedy night that’s pretty damn funny so far.

Throw two and two together and what we got? We get tons of people choking on wantons and rice chunks a plenty whilst listening to some cool comics strut their stuff.

Jesus! Sounds like there’s so many things to do! Is there anything else you should know?

Stay for Karaoke after the darn comedy show! We want the whole o’ Chinatown to know that we got talent in our quaint little city of Ottawa!

Also, here’s our star studded lineup with professional/amateur comedians.

Vei Chong, Joel West, Matt Gallant, Emily Oh, Trevor Thompson, Anto Chan, Special Guest - China Doll

For more information and directions, call Vei at (613) 265 0928 or the Shanghai at (613) 233-4001.
