Apt613 candidates survey: Ottawa-Vanier

Survey by Natasha Mooney and Chris Connolly

Knowing a candidate’s favourite summer festival will not determine your vote. Revealing their guilty Ottawa pleasure will not set the pundits tongues a waggin’. And yet, the intrepid reporters at Apt613 still believe that the people have a right to know. Maybe knowing a bit about how the candidates would waste a Saturday afternoon will inspire us all to keep an eye out for other misuses of precious resources (cynicism alert!).

Towards that end, 0ur election correspondents Natasha Mooney and Chris Connolly sent out a questionnaire to local candidates in a number of Ottawa ridings, asking them to identify their favourite lunch spot, green space, etc. To give our little exercise a dose of heft, we added three bonified questions to the mix:
1) What are your roots in your riding and how have you been involved in the community?
2) Why should our readers vote for you?
3) How would you contribute to the vibrancy of Ottawa’s arts and culture scene?

First up are the candidates of Ottawa-Vanier, where the representatives of all four of the main political parties were kind enough to respond. (We tried to contact the representative for the Marxist-Leninist Party – Christian Legeais – but could not find his contact information anywhere. If you know how we could get in touch please let us know at apartment613@gmail.com).

Fun fact: two out of four Vanier Ottawa candidates claim The Classic Killaloe Sunrise as their favorite beaver tail flavour. Which two? The answer may surprise you.

‘Bare’ at the Dale Smith Gallery

Dale Smith Gallery is pleased to present ‘Bare’, an exhibition of recent paintings by acclaimed Ottawa artist Sarah Hatton.

‘Bare’ is a series of life studies that depict a very young girl, naked and at rest.  Devoid of idealism or conventional poses, the work presents the child as a neutral blank slate upon which to project our own experiences and expectations.

“I am aware that the viewer will react individually to these portraits, whether it is with admiration or intimidation, and I am interested in the conclusions that the viewer will draw when left to their own interpretation.”

Join Sarah Hatton and friends at the opening reception on Friday, December 11, 2009 from 7 to 10 p.m.
The show continues until Tuesday, January 5 inclusive.

Please contact the gallery for more information.

Maple Festival this Weekend in Vanier

Much like everything else, the best part of spring is the sugar – the maple sugar, that is. Most of the time the sugar shacks (aka sugar bushes) which collect and process the sweet sap of the quintessential Canadian tree are waaaaaaaaaaay out in the boonies, meaning you have to have a car or a pony to get there. Luckily for us, the capital region is home to North America’s  only urban cabane à sucre. Even more luckily, there is currently a Maple Festival underway. The event culminates with a Brunch and Show event on Sunday that will feature a Lumberjack Competition (woo hoo), Réjean Desjardins en duo and Michel-André Vallières on stage, Aboriginal Experiences, Face Painters, Snow Dogs, Sugar Shack, SugarFest Brunch, Taffy on snow, Bouchon the Clown, Wagon Rides and Ray’s Reptile Adventure for all of those who want to see a tarantula walk on the snow.

To get there by bus, get to the Rideau Center and take Bus route 5 direction St Laurent. Get off at the DES PÈRES BLANCS stop and walk about 2 minutes until you get to 300 des Pères Blancs. Click here for directions to get there by pony/car.
