Step aside Burt Bacharach: Remi Royale takes Lounge Music to the extreme

Forget crooning men in slick suits; Remi Royle is not your grandmother’s lounge singer. Royale, a comedy/music act that plays the first and last Sunday of each month at the Manx Pub (370 Elgin), is the type of act you either love… or hate. The contentious act is now the subject of a mini-documentary by Algonquin Documentary Arts student Julien Sokol, who first saw Royale in action a year and a half ago.

I remember his performance had a very polarizing effect on the audience. Half the people seemed to like it, and the other half seemed really annoyed by it. That part always stayed with me…the kind of love/hate relationship audiences have with him.

The video was Sokol’s first mini doc, although he is planning on creating others. If you want to see what side of Remi Royale fence you stand on, catch his next show at the Manx on January 22.

I’m dreaming of a Gremlins Christmas…

By Eleni Armenakis

As of December 1st the holiday season officially began, raising the oh-so-troubling question of what you can do to celebrate this year. While walking downtown sipping a piping hot chocolate and enjoying the newly-lit trees near Parliament is certainly an option, if you want to stay out of the cold, another option is enjoying some of the festive (and perhaps not so festive) holiday movies being shown in the city.

Unsurprisingly, the Mayfair has gone all out this year with a nice mix of comedy and terror to get you into the holiday spirit.

My Dad Vs. Yours will make you quit your government job

Ottawa experimental indie band My Dad Vs. Yours recently released a new album entitled Little Symphonies. Local filmmaker Luca Fiore of Valkaline Productions took two songs off the album, “Happy Wander” and “Carry the Weight” to create one impressive video that will make all young at heart public servants want to quit their job.

Fiore, who directed the video, says he was listening to the album in a café downtown when he conceived the concept of the video. “I guess I’ve always been a big fan of messing shit up.  [I thought] let’s just tear up this office and yell and play with kids!” The band allowed for a lot of artistic freedom in the video, says Fiore, “They didn’t know what to expect and were apprehensive about appearing in it.”  You can catch their cameo as the four bespectacled adult office workers.

“Snow! Blizzard! Minus 14!” YouTube star Wilbur Sarguanaraj came to Ottawa, lamented our Prime Minister’s Tamil vocabulary, tried a beaver tail and somehow found a pair of those annoying red mittens. The results make for an awesome way to start your weekend.

YouTube Watch: Farhaven vs Downertown

YouTube Preview Image

Forget politics, race or religion… the real dividing line in Ottawa is urban vs suburban. Are you a pretentious yuppie willing to pay exorbitant prices for a tiny downtown condo? Or are you a cultureless drone happy to live a boring existence at the ends of the earth for the sake of more square footage? This series of videos by posted on YouTube is perhaps the most succinct depiction of the eternal battle between these two incompatible philosophies.

Looking For A House in Barrhaven by Littlepun1 (above), the first and most popular in the series with 42,000 hits, takes the side of downtown, pointing out the drawbacks of the suburbs (no bars, long treks to civilization, no fun). These rebuttals, Having a Party in Barrhaven by chappah and Barrhaven Rebuttal by bloomcounty40, take the side of the suburbs by complaining about long lines, high drink prices and the smell of urine. All three are pretty funny.

Just a couple of points for chappah in his defense of Farhaven: we also have rooms that act like your mythical suburban garages… they are called basements. My friend Josh has a pingpong table in his. Plus where are you getting these $8 beers? The Chateau Laurier? Don’t make the mistake of confusing downtown with the market… Elgin, Preston Street and Beechwood are also downtown and avoid most of the stuff you were complaining about.

Charlie for Mayor – A documentary short

The Ottawa municipal elections are already a few months past. Is it silly of me to miss the #ottvote hash tag on Twitter? Out of curiosity, I did a search last week to see if anyone still uses it and found a tweet by mayoral candidate Charlie Taylor.

He had, like many other candidates, retired his campaign Twitter account, but recently used the tool to share a documentary short – an inside look at his campaign.  It’s an interesting look inside the ambitions, joys and frustrations of running a campaign when you’re not one of the leading candidates.

A few weeks ago a couple of us headed down to the Idle Hands craft show at Patrick Gordon Framing. Our purpose? To seek out some of the best local hand-made gifts for your viewing and shopping pleasure. Also, we had a shiny new video camera we wanted to test run. The result was the second 100 Mile Gift Guide vlog post (you can see last year’s instalment at Workshop here).

A big thanks to Patrick Gordon Framing and all the crafters who participated in our film extravaganza:

Hollerado’s amazing new music video for Americanarama

YouTube Preview Image

Launched just a few days ago on October 3, but already with 39,000 hits, local favorite Hollerado’s new music video is going viral. Described by the band as a “human 8-bit” experiment”, director Greg Jardin turned a ragtag group of friends and a stack of poster boards into music video magic. The video was shot in one take and was slowed down 400% in order to get the jerky, comic feel to the motions. According to Much Music, Hollorado’s effort is challenging OK Go for the title of coolest music video of the year.

Hollerado is about to launch their North American tour, which unfortunately doesn’t include any Ottawa dates. You’ll have to head to Toronto on October 16 to see them live.
