Apartment613 Science! The great cupcake challenge

Although other cities have already moved on to macarons and whoopee pies, Ottawa has just recently hopped on the cupcake train (though we already have our own cupcake video).  The cupcake trend has exploded in Ottawa, with three new cupcakeries opening over the past year.  And why not?  What’s not to like about moist, flavourful, delicate cake crowned with a royal swirl of sweet frosting?

In order to help our readers navigate the increasingly crowded sea of cupcake providers in Ottawa, Apartment613 spent two hot nights consuming many soft, sweet pillows of awesomeness from six local bakers.  We tasted until the room spun and our bodies buzzed with glucose, until questions like “is anyone else having trouble seeing?” echoed in the summer evening.  We sacrificed for you, dear readers.

In all, we sampled from five cupcake shops with storefront locations – The Flour Shoppe, Isobel’s Cupcakes and Cookies, Thimblecakes, Cupcake Lounge, and Glitz Cupcakes and Company.  We also included Auntie Loo’s, because although it’s a vegan bakery and not a cupcakery, it’s extremely well-known for its cupcakes. As for our method, we purchased two chocolate, two vanilla, and two special-flavoured cupcakes from each, and we graded them out of five in five categories: scent, visual appeal, the taste of the cake, the taste of the icing, and how everything fit together. It was a blind taste test, so we didn’t know whose cupcake we were assessing. And we didn’t sample from online-only cupcakeries (many of whom provide wonderful products!), but we hope to consider evaluating these outlets once our temporary diabetes disappears.

So although we’d normally indulge happily in a tasty treat from any of these shops, we put on our tough critic hats and made some difficult –and sometimes bittersweet – proclamations about Ottawa’s cupcake scene. With fingers licked clean, and sugar hangovers dispersed, here are our results of our first ever Cupcake Challenge.

Apartment613 Science: Egg Nog!

Ah yes – the one time of the year where this liquid custard-like drink makes an appearance on our supermarkets shelves. The one time of the year, where, it is “ok” to gain a few pounds drowning yourself in the nectar of holiday gods – the one time of the year where sharing is put on the way side, so that you may in fact, hoard and cherish it all for yourself.

Ok, that might seem a tad cruel.

I think it goes without saying, that, people worldwide just wouldn’t deem it an appropriate holiday season if they didn’t have some eggnog to benefit from it with.

“Nog” stems from the word “noggin”, a Middle English term used to describe a small, carved wooden mug used to serve alcohol. However, the British drink was also called Egg Flip.

Unfortunately, most nogs on the current market scene are chalk full of processed sugars, preservatives and junk – but this does not mean one can’t enjoy it (once, or twice a year). I decided, since I was going to buy some of the super market brands, that I’d investigate which would be the best and which one I’d rather spend my money on. This little adventure began when one of my colleagues and I discovered we both really, really like eggnog.

Apartment613 Science! Vegetarian pizza taste test

We poked, prodded, measured, and quantified the wares from eight Ottawa pizza joints – all in the name of delicious, delicious science. Every respectable urbanite needs a good, easy and cheap pizza in their take-out repertoire, and this episode of Apartment613 Science! strives to arm you with the information you need to make informed pizza decisions.

To set the scene: a team of eager Apartment613 editors and volunteers show up armed with a bottle of wine and enough cash to order a pizza. We develop a shortlist of pizza places, collect phone numbers and prepare timers. Each pizza is judged primarily on personal reflection of taste, with attention being paid to toppings, sauce, crust and temperature. To help compare apples to apples, the order has to be the same at each place – one medium vegetarian pizza. Here are the results!

Wakey Juice, Liquid Crack, the Black Ichor Of Life… Coffee by any other name would smell as sweet, especially first thing in the morning. More then just a beverage, coffee is ritual, wake up call, excuse for a break and more to millions of Canadians, not excluding Ottawans. Needless to say, the supreme importance bean juice plays in our daily lives means that the topic of the best brew is a highly personal, and hence contentious, issue.

Luckily, Apartment613 never backs down from a challenge! However, for this particular Best Of we’ve decided to ditch our usual opinion-based approach for the rigors of science. Accordingly, this Sunday we rounded up four highly buzzed individuals – two men and two women – to take part in a blind taste test.

Cups of medium roast black coffee were acquired from six popular venues: Planet Coffee, Ideal Coffee, Bridgehead, Francesco’s, Second Cup and Starbucks. The six were largely chosen on the basis of their proximity to Apartment613 science headquarters in the Glebe, except for Planet Coffee and Ideal which where selected for their popularity and presumed awesomeness. The testers each took part in six rounds of testing, where they ranked the beverages on a scale from 1 to 10. In order to get around a bias for coffees tasted earlier (or later) in the process, in each round the testers were given a different sample. Of course, none of the testers knew which brew they tasted until after all the sipping and slurping was finished.

As a note - this test is intended to test the quality of each establishment’s brewed coffee only, and does not reflect other considerations that might make that particular coffee shop great (i.e. atmosphere, friendly staff, location, fair-trade products, etc.)

And without further ado, from first to last here are the results of our first best brew test!
