The Young Environmental Professionals (YEP) of Canada is a national organization of local chapters dedicated to creating opportunities for young and emerging environmental and sustainability professionals. They organize all sorts of activities from conferences to talks to networking events. Every Spring, YEP organizes an awesome eco scavenger hunt. Last year’s hunt made us run through the Byward market and beyond. This year’s will take us all over downtown Tuesday, June 8th.
Team check-in begin at 5:15. The scavenger hunt will begin at 5:30pm. The scavenger hunt should take from 45-60 minutes.
Location: The eco-scavenger hunt will start and end at the Centennial Flame on Parliament Hill and will take place within the downtown Ottawa area. The group will meet at the Flame to hand out the first clue.
Equipment: All participants should wear comfortable clothing (weather appropriate) and footwear. Each team is also required to bring one digital camera for bonus points.
Format: To start the eco-scavenger hunt, each team will be given one ecoclue. The eco-clue will lead the team to a notable landmark around the downtown area. Upon arrival at the correct landmark, the team must locate the YEP ‘clue bag’ to find the next clue (sample ‘clue-bag’ provided at check-in for easy identification). The team will proceed from landmark to landmark until they reach the ‘clue-bag’ that holds the clue with which they started. At that point the team must return to the start/end point at the Centennial Flame to check in and have their time recorded.
*All team members must return to the Flame together with ALL of the clues in hand to complete the race. Your time will not be stopped until all team members cross the finish line.
*Participants are only allowed to travel by foot or by wheelchair. All other modes of transportation (bikes, roller-blades, skateboards, cars, buses, taxis) are not permitted.
*For landmarks that are local businesses, the YEP ‘clue-bag’ will be located on the street outside of the local business. Please do not enter the identified local businesses to look for the YEP ‘clue-bag’.
*Each team will be provided with a map of the area; all landmarks will be located within the area identified on the map.
*Each team will also be given a list of bonus eco-items to photograph during the race. For each successful bonus photograph submitted, teams will have 30 seconds shaved off of their final time.
Accessibility: This event is free of charge and open to everyone (members and non-members) of all ages and abilities.
Wrap-Up Food & Drinks: YEP will wrap things up at D’Arcy McGees (44 Sparks Street) around 6:30pm. They have reserved the basement for the YEP group. There will be appetizers provided by YEP and a cash bar. Winners will be announced (and prizes distributed) around 7pm.
To register, submit your name to yep.ncr@gmail.com no later than Thursday, June 3rd. If you have already formed your team (3-4 members), please identify your team members (and team name) in your RSVP. If you are not already with an existing team, YEP will match you with other participants and send you your team information shortly after your registration.
