Orange you glad there’s a new gallery in Ottawa?

I’m sure you’ll all agree that some of the best things in life are orange: Tonka trucks, democratic revolutions, mango lassi, the  Dutch speed skating team. So are you really shocked that Ottawa’s newest art gallery would have named itself after such an uplifting, life-affirming colour? I’m not. Leave your chartreuses and your vermilions to the art-hating philistines of the world, say I.

This evening marks the public opening - or vernissage, if you prefer - of the Orange Art Gallery, which shares part of the converted Hintonburg soda pop factory that once housed Cube Gallery. (The Cube folks’ new digs are on busy Wellington Street, a couple blocks west of the GCTC, and they’re pretty stellar so go check them out.) The opening’s a three-day affair, starting with a “sneak preview” tonight at 6 p.m.  followed with two full days of browsing on Saturday and Sunday. The first exhibition, appropriately titled “Orange Peel,” will feature 12 Ottawa artists including the gallery’s founders, husband-and-wife duo Matthew Jeffrey and Ingrid Hollander. Says Hollander about the exhibition:

The artists are a group of established and rising stars. The art is all contemporary and each artist is very different. People should expect to see a gallery which is more typical in big cities such as Toronto and New York City. The large open space and high ceilings give [the gallery] a loft feeling…

The Orange Art Gallery is located at 233 Armstrong St. in the heart of the QUAD, just across from the yet-to-be-opened Parkdale Market.
