Weekly News Review: City news! Fire chief, Communications, Needles, Decisions & Cuts

All the news that's fit to print.

All the news that's fit to print.

The City of Ottawa parted ways on Wednesday with director of communication Denis Abbott and have gone in a different, “fresh” direction hiring Derek Puddicombe from the Ottawa Sun, Patrick Dare of the Ottawa Citizen and Chris Day, press secretary for Transport Minister John Baird. Puddicombe and Dare will work as communication strategists and will be managed by Day, who reported for CJOH television before working for Baird. No explanation was given for Abbott’s dismissal aside from saying it was effective immediately. Deputy city manager Steve Kanellakos made sure to say he’s not hiring “spin masters” but individuals that understand the issues of the city.

After a five month process, the city is in the final stages of picking a new fire chief to replace retired Rick Larabie. It’s certainly taken longer than local fire fighters had hoped and they wish this leadership issue will be resolved as quickly as possible.

516, 242 needles have been retrieved by Ottawa Public Health so far this year - more than in all of 2008. Most of these come from  from the clean needle program. The rest were returned to needle drop boxes, were reported to a hotline or were found on the street by needle hunters. This is both positive and alarming news -positive because needles are picked up more quickly and individuals are using the hotline. The flip side of it is that there is concern that there are more users and more needs to be done to help rehabilitate addicts.

The City of Ottawa’s new audit, budget and finance committee was charged with whipping ambitious budget requests from other city council committees into a budget Ottawans will accept, has spent most of Friday making its way through an omnibus motion aimed at cutting the 2010 tax increase to 3.9 per cent. Not an easy task, given that if the city had approved everything proposed, the city tax would go up 9.6%.

As such, here are some of the decisions made by the committee, courtesy of The Ottawa Citizen:

I had mentioned early in the month how November was such a fantastic time for music in Ottawa. Here are some of the cool shots that were taken at various Ottawa shows. Arkells are featured up top, Wax Mannequin, Jill Zmud and Bonjay in the middle row and The Most Serene Republic at the bottom.  A big thanks to Ming Wu (blurasis) and Jesse Hildebrand for these photos - aside from being great photographers, I’m constantly amazed at the number of shows they make it out to.
