Audio Visual Podcast Rundown Sept. 30

With this week’s edition of AV Peter and I themed the show around digital rights — an inadvertent move on our part, but it’s coincidentally well-timed given Industry Canada’s recent Copyright Consultation. First we talked to musician Bob Wiseman, a member of the Canadian Music Creators Coalition, a group dedicated to raising awareness about cultural policy that directly impacts Canadian artists. While our discussion with Bob was about his eclectic use of multimedia during his live performances, the interview provides a window into the world of an artist trying to make a living in the Internet era. Bob is performing at the Black Sheep Inn this Sunday at 4 p.m. with Lynne Hanson and David Tough. Our second interview is with the acclaimed sci-fi author and digital-rights advocate Cory Doctorow, whose name you may recognize from bOING bOING. The XKCD comic posted in this entry depicts the impact Cory has had in the world of tech culture. Cory was in town on Monday to talk about his new book Little Brother at Writer’s Fest. I asked Cory about the future about e-publishing, the Kindle, how Creative Commons licenses have helped him gain notoriety as a writer and copyright law in Canada.

Quick note about AV’s new direction as a pre-recorded show: due to our busy school schedules, Peter and I have started to edit the shows in advance. As such, we are still trying to figure out the conventions of this format. We apologize for the technical difficulties and appreciate your understanding as we try to iron out the sound-quality and editing kinks.

Great show! I finally got around to listening to it after all the Pop Montreal craziness.
